UTC Offers Program to Assist Military Spouses

UTC’s Veteran Student Services is partnering with the Center for Professional Education to offer financial assistance to active-duty military spouses.

Through the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts scholarship program, spouses may receive up to $4,000 over two years to pursue degree programs, licenses or credentials that lead to employment in portable career fields. Such careers include occupations in the management, technology, organizational and health-care fields. Eligible participants include those spouses of active-duty service members or activated National Guard and Reserve members.

Two Honors College students received two of the most prestigious awards in the country.

Simone Edwards received the J. William Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship, the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program. She is the first UTC student to be awarded the Fulbright scholarship in at least 30 years.

Olivia George was chosen for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, a highly competitive and acclaimed fellowship awarded to outstanding students in the STEM fields for graduate study.

 

Communication Head Chosen as One of Country’s Best

Felicia McGhee, interim head of the Department of Communication, is one of nine people nationwide selected to participate in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Institute for Diverse Leadership in Journalism and Communication.

The institute focuses on increasing the number of people of color and women who serve as chairs, deans, directors and endowed chairs in journalism and communication education. It also works to increase
the number of women and people of color who hold professorships as well as sit on educational and professional boards of journalism and communication organizations.

 

Scenic Roots Shared on WUTC

Ray Bassett has joined the staff of WUTC-FM, bringing more than 20 years of experience as a producer and editor in New York City—including with famed broadcaster Charles Osgood on The Osgood File. He also launched a program that didn’t exist anywhere else in the city’s broadcast market. Titled Scenic Roots, it presents long-form conversations with the people, events and issues that matter to the region.

 

School of Nursing Program Earns National Top 40 Ranking

The School of Nursing’s doctorate of nurse practice program has been ranked among the best in the country. In a list of the Top 50 Department of Nursing Programs in the U.S., UTC’s is No. 40, according to Study.com, an online educational website. UTC was selected due to its academic and career resources as well as the quality of education and faculty, according to Study.com officials.
