2019 NightinGala Honors Mid-South Nurses

Nearly 250 nurses and supporters from across Memphis, Shelby County and beyond attended the third annual NightinGala hosted by the College of Nursing at the UT Health Science Center. The gala, held in conjunction with National Nurses Week, saluted the accomplishments of nurses and the impact the profession has on the community.

Ann Cashion, acting director and scientific director of the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health, gave the keynote address. Cashion is a graduate of the Ph.D. in nursing program and a former department chair in the UTHSC College of Nursing.

“We were honored to have such a great turnout from our community to show appreciation and support of our nurses, who selflessly care for the well-being of others and make a difference in our lives,” says Wendy Likes, UTHSC College of Nursing dean.

UTHSC has received accreditation for a new anesthesiology residency program in its College of Medicine.
The residency program was approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education following a detailed application process that involved collaboration by the university and its partner teaching hospitals. The inaugural cohort of residents will start in July 2020.

“Anesthesia is a support service, but we’re a critical support service because we interface with so many areas of the hospital,” says Steven Boggs, UTHSC professor and chair of anesthesiology.

“I know there’s a tremendous demand for anesthesiologists in the Mid-South. So I think we will be filling a very important niche.”

The UT Health Science Center is ranked in the Top 10 among the 2019 Safest Colleges in America, according to a list released by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

The organization compiled the list using data from law enforcement and FBI crime reports. It looked at 490 colleges, excluding those with fewer than 1,000 students and those that did not submit crime reports to the FBI. Two variables were considered, the crime rates and the police adequacy for the size of the campus. UTHSC ranked at No. 9.

The UTHSC campus, under the direction of Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operations Officer Ken Brown, is in the midst of more than $30 million in security improvements. These include state-of-the-art video security technology, wireless and keyless access for all buildings, and a new emergency operations center in the lower level of the General Education Building to monitor security on campus and in the Memphis Medical District.
