Ending Domestic Violence

Domestic abuse survivor Mildred Muhammad, the ex-wife of “D.C. sniper” John A. Muhammad, was the keynote speaker Oct. 28 at Bridging Troubled Waters, a free community forum at UTHSC aimed at ending domestic violence, resolving conflicts peacefully and building healthy relationships.

Muhammad said 80 percent of victims do not have physical scars, and that makes it more difficult for them to get help. She knows firsthand the toll domestic violence takes. Her ex-husband went on a three-week shooting rampage in Washington, D.C., in 2002. After his conviction and execution, she learned from police that she was the primary target of his rage, and his goal had been to find her and kill her, too.

Dentistry Reaccredited

The College of Dentistry received full reaccreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, the nation’s largest dental association.

The designation, which lasts for seven years, came after a rigorous process that included a curriculum review, site visits and interviews with patients, faculty, staff and students. In conjunction with its educational mission, the College of Dentistry maintains clinics across the state—in Memphis, Jackson, Union City, Chattanooga and Bristol. New clinical sites are in development in Nashville and Knoxville.

The UTHSC College of Dentistry educates more than 70 percent of dentists practicing in Tennessee and roughly half of the dentists in Arkansas.
