Special Adviser on Diversity and Inclusion

Noma Anderson

UT President Joe DiPietro named Noma Anderson special adviser to the president on diversity and inclusion, effective July 1. Anderson, former dean of the UT Health Science Center’s College of Health Professions, counsels DiPietro on strategic planning and decision-making for diversity and inclusion initiatives system-wide, focusing on aligning initiatives with the mission and goals of the university. She also supports work to enhance the university’s reputation as an employer of choice and to evaluate the university’s climate toward diversity and inclusion.

Record-low Tuition Increases, Sustainable Funding Milestone

UT President Joe DiPietro speaks at UT Board of Trustees meeting in June.

At 2.2 percent, UT tuition increases for the 2016-2017 academic year are the lowest in more than three decades. Along with a 5.4 percent increase over the previous year in state financial support, UT’s commitment to cutting costs and maximizing resources led to the historically low tuition increases. The university’s 2016-2017 fiscal year budget of $2.2 billion was approved by the board of trustees at its June meeting.

Meanwhile, President Joe DiPietro’s sustainable funding initiative finished the first of two fiscalyear cycles in which self-imposed budget restrictions are in place across the UT system. As of the end of year one, almost $61 million had been re-allocated statewide—by cutting or avoiding costs, or adding revenue—toward a target of $68 million to be reallocated by 2017. At the end of the current fiscal year, on June 30, 2017, DiPietro and campus leaders will assess the effectiveness of the measures toward determining next steps in achieving long-term, sustainable funding for the UT system.

Larry Arrington
Tim Cross

On his fifth anniversary in office, UT Institute of Agriculture Chancellor Larry Arrington retired on Sept. 1. UT President Joe DiPietro named UT Extension Dean Tim Cross interim chancellor, and a search for Arrington’s permanent successor is underway. DiPietro says he hopes to recommend a candidate to the UT Board of Trustees by January and to have the new chancellor in place during the first quarter of 2017. In addition to UT Extension, UTIA also includes UT AgResearch, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
