Neal O’Steen, former editor of the Tennessee Alumnus for more than 20 years upon his retirement in 1985, died on March 6 at Somerfield Health Care Center in Brentwood, Tennessee. Mr. O’Steen was 96.
He was a Bedford County, Tennessee native who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. His career included stops at the Kingsport Times and the Virginian Pilot before he became editor of the University of Tennessee News Bureau in 1957.
He later became UT director of publications, including serving as Alumnus editor until his retirement.
Mr. O’Steen was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lowe O’Steen, and is survived by his son, Bill O’Steen of Decatur, Georgia; daughter, Peggy O’Steen Naifeh of Nashville; and grandson, Mark Naifeh of Nashville.
