For 18 years as president, Dr. Ed Boling guided the University of Tennessee’s evolution as a modern, high-quality land-grant institution. Boling, who died June 18 at age 93, was remembered and honored at the annual meeting of the UT Board of Trustees. “There is no better way to honor Dr. Boling’s legacy than by working hard to achieve our goals,” UT President Joe DiPietro told the trustees. Boling served as president from 1970 to 1988, the longest term in the office since 1883.
A More Diverse UT
Creating more diverse and inclusive learning and working environments was the focus of UT’s first university-wide diversity summit hosted by UT’s Diversity Advisory Council in April. More than 150 faculty and staff attended the one-day training and best-practice showcase led by senior leaders, researchers and practitioners from around the country. Loyola University Associate Professor Bridget Kelly (Knoxville ’95), pictured above, spoke to the group about the many forms of diversity, examining oppression and acknowledging power and privilege.

The lowest system-wide undergraduate tuition percent increase in more than 30 years took effect this fall. It’s one of the first signs of striking change in the UT’s business model to address a projected $377 million annual funding gap over the next decade and shift the burden away from students and their families.
Unprecedented Collaboration
For the past five years, researchers and students from across Tennessee’s public and private universities have been working together as part of a $20 million National Science Foundation (NSF) cooperative agreement won by the state in 2010. Through TN-SCORE (Tennessee Solar Conversion and Storage using Outreach, Research and Education), led by UT, overall NSF funding to Tennessee increased from $35.1 million in 2009 to $51.4 million in 2014.

The fall 1976 issue featured three UT Olympians on its cover: Matt Vogel in swimming and Ernie Grunfeld and Pat Head in basketball. Vogel won two gold medals, and Grunfeld won a team gold. The Lady Vols coach, later to become Pat Summitt, was co-captain of the silver-medal winning team.
