Robert Fisher, Brock Scholar, political science major and newly re-elected Student Government Association President at UTC, has been named a 2014 Truman Scholar by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. He is the fourth student in the school’s history to be named a Truman Scholar. Fisher will receive up to $30,000 for graduate study, priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government.
New Opportunity for Campus Entrepreuners
UTC and The Company Lab (CO.LAB) have partnered to launch a new UTC/GIGTANK Fellowship to engage qualified student entrepreneurs and UTC faculty as participants in GIGTANK 2014. GIGTANK is an entrepreneurial accelerator that attracts national talent to Chattanooga each year for 10 to12 weeks of intensive startup development. All GIGTANK teams receive $15,000 in initial seed funding and an opportunity to attract additional investment. This year, the recipients of the UTC/GIGTANK Fellowship are Robin Moldenhauer, Kevin Ringstaff and Rupinder Kaur. They will work with Ashish Gupta, associate professor of analytics and information systems in the UTC College of Business, on a big data analytics startup for the GIGTANK Healthcare track.
A Real Find
In the 1800s, Charles Darwin collected a beetle specimen in Argentina that was subsequently lost but was recently found by UTC Associate Professor Stylianos Chatzimanolis in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Chatzimanolis made a request of the Natural History Museum in London, and among the unidentified, unsorted materials, he discovered the rove beetle, tagged as part of the Darwin collection. Chatzimanolis named the new genus and species in an academic paper published on Feb. 12, 2014, what would have been Darwin’s 205th birthday.
Summit in Chattanooga
The Tennessee Valley Corridor Summit, one of the Southeast’s longest running science and technology conferences, was co-hosted by UTC Chancellor Steve Angle and U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. Chattanooga’s history of manufacturing excellence, entrepreneurial development, and technological advancement drew the summit to Chattanooga. UT System President Joe DiPietro addressed participants on June 5.
