Comfortable with College

Jayanni Webster wasn’t sure about attending UT Knoxville. Now she’s a member of the prestigious College Scholars Program and a world traveler.

Webster took advantage of UT LEAD, another example of a new retention program on campus. It’s a support program for students who come to UT with the Pledge or Promise scholarship.

Webster, a Memphis native who is the first in her family to attend UT, spent the spring semester studying in northern Uganda as part of her individualized program of study, “Post-Conflict Education in Africa,” through College Scholars.

“The UT LEAD program was the reason I became so comfortable with the campus and its academic expectations,” Webster says. “It’s an essential program that brings in students who are diverse in terms of background, economic status, race, and ethnicity. They take those students and give them the opportunity to acclimate themselves to the campus environment.”
